You might think some people just get lucky when they seem to waltz in and land the job you’ve been dreaming about. Although often there’s more going on behind the scenes that helped them get that interview and land that job. They might’ve been working on the three R’s. I’m not talking about reading, writing and arithmetic. I’m talking about being at the right place, with a relevant resume and knowing the right people. They weren’t hoping for a lucky break to get the job, they made their own luck.

Revamp Your Resume

You might not have changed your job since the last time you updated your resume, but that doesn’t mean your resume is still relevant. Poor formatting, irrelevant terms, outdated information and the lack of keywords can result in your resume missing out on getting a second glance.

That is, if it gets past the computer system that seeks out relevant keywords. Tweak your resume for each job you apply for to tailor it specifically to the job you’re seeking. Review the job description listed and include some of the keywords in your resume and cover letter.

Sometimes it is Who You Know

Networking is an unsavory term for many people, but it doesn’t have to be. You don’t have to stand around and try to sell yourself to a group of strangers. Think of networking as building relationships.

  • Consider your current friends and family and who they know. Ask for an introduction.
  • It doesn’t have to be a business meeting, perhaps you can meet other professionals while enjoying a hobby or taking a class.
  • You don’t necessarily have to be prepared with a resume and business cards, sometimes a warm smile and engaging conversation can take you further.
  • Remember to ask questions about the other person. This is a social occasion, not an interview, show interest in them.

Look at Your LinkedIn Profile

Remember that LinkedIn is a professional network. Use a professional-looking photo. Let your community know what kind of job you’re seeking and tell them more about your expertise and skills. Even if you’re not looking for a job today, maintain your professionalism while posting and commenting. Consider your interaction on this site as building your reputation and your expertise.

Make relevant connections. Someone might have the perfect #job you didn’t even know you wanted. #career Click To Tweet

Educate Yourself

Consider your skills. Just how rusty are they? Are you up-to-date on key skills required for the job you desire? Do you have them at all?

  • Take an online class
  • Buy a book
  • Attend an inservice.

No matter how you gain the eduction, never stop learning. Things you’ve learned years ago may have changed, or have updates – don’t let yourself, or your skills, become irrelevant.

Alter Your Attitude

Don’t speak poorly about your current, or former, boss when you’re interviewing or networking. Most people realize there are two sides to the story, and that opinions are subjective. A bad attitude only reflects poorly on you.
